After a crazy 8 hour bus ride from Sukhothai, we were back in Bangkok, older, wiser (arguably I was uglier!) and ready to duel with the locals!

We got to Sukhothai and it had a rather different feel to Chiang Mai. Sukhothai was the first ancient capital of Siam and we went there to see the ruins of this. A new town has been built about 10km away from these ruins and this is where we found our guesthouse – (more…)

On Saturday 22nd, we took a trip to the Mae Sa Elephant Training camp 20km north of Chiang Mai. It was a 45 minute schlep on the moped on quite busy roads and so not quite so pleasant, but the elephant camp was worth it.

It definitely was a moving and humbling experience going to the orphanage. We were greeted by Jane, (an Aussie) when we arrived who showed us around. There are 63 children at Agape ranging in age from babies to 14 years old. Agape specifically takes in children with HIV and is a Christian orphanage set up around 9 years ago by a Canadian lady who recognised the need, since regular orphanages refused to work with HIV kids.

The 45 minute flight from Luang Prubang was very straightforward (apart from the terrible food!) and we arrived in Chiang Mai at about 3pm, which was very cool indeed as Bec and I had become accustomed to long bus journeys that took up entire days.

The second part of the Bangkok saga comes from another serene setting. From the Riverside Bungalows in Vang Vieng which is a small town in Laos, Bangkok is but a distant memory and I’m having to refer to my notes to imagine such a crazy city. Now this is the life I tell you and here’s a sneak preview.

Sitting at a table at our guesthouse on the bank of the Mekong River, Bangkok feels a million miles away right now (thank goodness!) but the memories are still vivid. Like a sharp poke in the eye. We’ll write more about the Mekong later, but for now, Bangkok – what a crazy town. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so many emotions in the space of 3 days…
